Our experience delivering schools, community, commercial and residential projects is wide reaching and we take pride in listening and collaborating with clients and the project team.
VANESSA ANDERSON
For over 15 years Vanessa has designed education projects in Worcestershire serving both the local authority and independent academy trusts. As a lead architect she engaged in all aspects of the project cycle from feasibility, concept design and contract management, to construction administration.
A Certified Passivhaus Designer, Vanessa champions sustainable design with a focus on lower running costs, user comfort and simple ways to refurbish existing buildings to harness natural light and warmth. Her immense knowledge of construction methods and materials drives this effort.
Vanessa’s interest in architecture and people has led her to work in Jamaica, Malaysia, London, Birmingham and now Worcester on a range of projects in commercial, residential and retail sectors. A focus on community participation in the design process, developed whilst studying for her Masters degree, resulted in a period working for the Midlands Architecture and the Designed Environment (MADE), coordinating community consultations and honing her project programming skills.
With a keen interest in a wide variety of creative disciplines such as graphic and fabric design Vanessa’s work is often identified by an attention to detail. She introduces design solutions and building materials that instill a unique and integral statement.
ANITA MARLES
After qualifying at University of Arizona, Anita spent a brief time in Boston Massachusetts designing hotels and restaurants before moving to the UK in 1989. Anita worked for Skidmore Owings and Merrill Inc., the largest architectural practice in the world at that time, on projects in London, Cairo and Moscow. Her skills as a project manager and designer excelled in this international setting and she became an Associate in 1993.
Anita later joined RTKL Inc. in London, working on commercial projects including Nestlé’s headquarters, Alders Department Store, designing a marriage hall in Jeddah and Computer Sciences Corporation’s Dutch headquarters.
More recently Anita turned her hand to high end residential projects in central London and Worcester. Space efficiency is paramount in this building type, and these projects often require intensive negotiation with the local planning authorities. Using these talents, Anita secured planning permission to convert the iconic 1939 Fire and Rescue Headquarters in Worcester to 22 new flats with retail or healthcare space in the former fire engine bays.
As a Director of Herlig Architecture Ltd. Anita is known for her strong project management skills and creative problem solving. She offers a high level of experience on large projects both as a team leader and designer. Her ability to listen to the client and understand the demands of a site and building function results in projects that are appropriate to their context and budget and which delight the user.

We have a heart for the City of Worcester and dedicate time to supporting the local community through our pro bono ‘Project 10’ scheme and young people as STEM Ambassadors. We offer project services from start to finish. Often a project needs a quick feasibility study or site analysis. We can work swiftly at this stage to provide clients with assurances and reduce risk.
Whatever the project – massive or modest, bold or sensitive – we answer a brief without ever losing sight of the practical, budgetary or commercial demands – oh yes, and the creation of an appropriately stunning building.
